I gotta tell you, I don't know what kind of balance can be made with the city and town design in terms of being more immersive or organic. Lumiose tells me that if you make the city too big, people will get lost way too easily. When I look at other RPGs, the cities and towns are never that big either, their only job is to give you a healing spot and some shops for items. Maybe they can contain a dungeon in the form of some big castle or mansion or a sewer, but there really isn't a reason for it to be that big. It can LOOK big, but if it's too complex, it will be too confusing. I do realize that cities will be blocky by default, but at least have a few curves in there. Or at least have the camera follow me. Seeing everything from only one perspective is most of what's dragging down the appeal of these things. Spinning Lumiose doesn't count, and neither does Castelia. It would be great if cities could actually feel like a city instead of a town, and if towns didn't have a population of exactly 3.
