My last pokemon game was Pearl I want to try pic related because Silver was my first pokemon game and I'm looking for a nostalgia trip. What changes should I expect? What are these mega evolution's I keep seeing on this board? Sorry first time I've come to this board.

Soul Silver has the same mechanics of pearl. That being said, find the changes for yourself. That is half the fun!

the game is faster because of running shoes. certain pokemon (like lapras) are easier to find. pokemon have abilities that make them more unique. whether an attack will utilize the physical or the special attack stat is now determined on an attack-by-attack basis, instead of on a type-by-type basis (meaning that every type, like water and fight, will have some moves that are physical and some that are special)

soulsilver is from the same generation as pearl, so while the pokemon you find and the story/music is from silver, the rest of the game is like pearl

Some spoilers for the new additions they added on from silver if you want to know:

There is now a route West of Ciannwood City that takes you to a safari zone in Johto. It's pretty cool because you can catch some pokemon earlier in the game that you couldn't normally catch in the originals like Larvatar, Murkrow, and Misdrevous

They also added pokemon from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum that evolve from kanto/johto pokemon into the dex, so you can get pokemon like Tangrowth, Yanmega, Mamoswine, etc before obtaining the national dex

They also added a new mini game near Goldenrod called pokeathelon, which is a good way to get certain evolution items, like the metal coat, earlier in the game
