Why do you think Game Freak (and maybe other japanese VG companies in general) is so secretive about the process of Pokemon?

The leak of the Gold and Silver beta for example- that is fascinating shit that everyone gushed over. We would have never known about it if it wasn't for a bunch of dedicated nerds. Why not share things like this? Pride? Or maybe it makes them look bad?

They are probably so secretive because they know other companies like to rip them off and sell bootlegs, which I happily buy.

That's probably the kind of mindset that could get them into legal trouble, because as stated by themselves on some interviews, no concept is ever thrown away and they like to reuse stuff, specially when it comes to pokemon designs.

So say you got beta porygon2, right, but the final design ends up looking nothing like the initial concept. You could save it and use it to make a different pokemon in the future, like sunny castorm or whatever (NOTE: saying early pory2 became sunny castform is speculation on my part, but this is also the case with too many other betas to be just a coincidence, like beta qwilfish, that has very clear whiscash-like elements, that one prototurtle pokemon that is basically a green tirtouga, beta latios which later gave us latios AND blaziken, etc.).

If you instead release all that beta content to the world, you risk other companies using them before you unless you put copyright on literally all of them, which I assume would take money and time that they simply don't have/want to invest.

Why would you bother showing off the scraps when you already have a finished product? There is just no benefit in showing off beta designs. If anything, it could hurt the creators.

the Zelda series does that, there is a concept art book with all the beta designs for BotW, and I don't think they care if someone rips off one of their designs because they trust the quality of their games and know they can face off the competition. Pokemon on the other hand don't really have much effort or quality nowadays, so it's not that hard for a competition to do something better (like Yo-Kai Watch and Digimon on Switch are doing, apparently)

My hypothesis:
1. Possibility of theft. Developers can still use some of the ideas in future games so they don't want to share them with the public. Others may steal them.
2. Possibility of gaining bad reputation. GSC are well remembered and learning how they came to be is interesting, however the same can't be said about every game. For example, I lost some of my respect for New World Computing (creators of Might and Magic franchise) when I learnt that they were producing shitty expansions to survive on the market.

Legit never new that. The rest of these are bad fakemon tier though. Its not hard to imagine that bad beta leaks might turn people away from the finished product, especially internationally (Lost Odyssey ended up critically shafted exactly because of this)

Yeah, but that book for BotW also shows their concept art in a published book which would hold as evidence in a court of law that the idea was yours first. Also, the aesthetic is very clearly from that game and it would be hard to steal any meaningful design practice without being a blatant rip-off and begging for Nintendo Lawyers to be breathing down your neck. Monster designs on the other hand are easier to spawn ideas off of.

Now that you mention it, if a real company was to make a game and use the beta designs found from this rom as monsters, could Nintendo sue them for it? Or would they just have to accept it because of copyright shenanigans?

It’s got nothing to do with thinking your designs are no good or whatever. Each Zelda has a different aesthetic whereas Pokémon designs can be used in any generation tinkering it enough
