Just take minute and imagine going from this game and trying Fire Red. Imagine how hard it would be without the handholding, especially for this Gym puzzle. Shit, this one was always the most frustrating in my opinion.

No more pokemon quizs, instead we have pokemon fact written on the machine in each room, after you finished reading the fact, the door leading to next room will automatically open, btw if you feel bored you can also challenge the trainers in each room, they are totally optional, cheers!

You click blue then you click red. It's obviously a reference to the famous scene in The Matrix where Neo is first offered the blue pill and then he is offered the red pill. The buttons also represent the effects of both pills with you clicking the blue can and things continuing like nothing happened. It is only after you click the red can afterwards that the path to progression and by extension freedom is exposed.
