ITT Pokemon you used wrong or didn't know their roles when you were a child/new to Pokemon

I was always wondering why Umbreon wouldn't do a lot of damage and was weak as hell.

I played Gens II and III before IV but was really young and started to mature during Gen IV, so I thought physical/special split was in every game until like 2011/I was 13

I never used crobat in gen 2 because zubat was such a shitmon that I thought it wouldn't be worth it (plus gen 1 had conditioned me to believe that a poison typing was a total liability). Nowadays I'll pick up an early game zubat in every game because having a fully evolved crobat in the early level 20s is godlike in the early game.

I used everything as an all-out attacker. I couldn't quite grasp what the importance of status moves like calm mind was so I just crammed 4 attacks into any mon.

I put the shittiest HMs on my strongest Pokemon because they were the strongest so the weakness of the moves would balance out.

I also thought Return was just a way to switch a Pokemon out, like U-turn.

Every Pokemon that could learn Strength and Brick Break would use them.

I thought this was true for the longest time as well. A lot of old JRPGs had a strange habit of not explaining certain mechanics at all, so I had figured it was always true; the games just never bothered to tell you until IV.

It took me until Gen 5 to realize the importance of status moves. My Scrafty was my mvp in the battle subway when I slapped random TMs on it until I found out the Bulk Up + Rest combination when I tried to make it’s Shed Skin ability to work. Was the fun times

The game didn't have really any feedback to the player so I never bothered with status/setup moves and just crashed through anything with some pokemon with high speed and an atk because even a mediocre pogermun becomes a monster when it was slightly overleveled and maxed out on EV's with full neutral coverage back then.

To be fair, they're good against the shitty AI and if you were oblivious to the wall concept, your progress wouldn't get reset like if you used double team. Then you'd just setup and sweep them.

To be fair, Sceptile has a great physical movepool and access to Swords Dance, so it's not as offensive as, say, never figuring out Trapinch could evolve because it could learn Hyper Beam.

For me, if it was physical in Gen IV, I thought it was the same in previous generations. Same for the move’s power/acc, for example i always thought Bite was physical. Would always wonder why hitmonchan’s elemental punches did piss nothing

I can't really blame you. Neither the instructions or the game really bother to explain what the Special stat does. I think the official Pokemon Yellow strategy guide was the only real information source at the time that had it.
