Ditto face is in a fuckton of official merch though. By the way, Lucario talking and Pokemon saying their names are also an anime thing and they're in Smash. Misty's trophy from Melee is her anime design and Ash is mentioned in SSB4.

All those anime things are actual consistent things though. Ditto face was literally one particular Ditto from the anime that had an issue when transforming, it's not something that the species as a whole has. Gamefreak went on to realize that they could capitalize on it to make a shitton of merch.

*TPC. Game Freak are so-called game devs, TPC do brand management which includes merch etc. Also, how, precisely, wouldn't the opportunity for ~70 Ditto faced Amiibo be a merch goldmine?

I think this is a fun Pokemon. Weren't they gonna implement this in Melee? I remember being able to get an unfunctional Ditto from the Debug menu using an Action Replay.

Yeah Ditto was planned for Melee but was cut due to time constraints. It ended up being the inspiration for Assist Trophies in Brawl I believe, since they had to develop simple character AIs anyways they figured why not stick them on entirely new characters instead of just clones of players.

i actually have a head canon that some dittos have a hard time getting colors right. like how in the anime there was a ditto who couldn't get sizes right and one with the now iconic ditto face. but even then it doesn't look like it's made of playdoh!

You're the retard if you think it can all be done with a texture swap. They'd need to make the face of the characters flat and thus disable facial expressions just to have the : ) face. I'd rather have them work on important stuff.
