To be fair Zelda games typically have 3 save slots so if the game is in a family home or a public place like a college dorm naming the character after yourself can help keep track of whose file it is.

In pokemon however your expected to have your own copy of the game and your own (3)DS so naming the character after yourself serves no purpose outside of RPing.

You're not playing a character, you're playing yourself. You get no dialogue, you get no characterizing choices. If I play New Vegas, I'm not naming my character after myself, but I will name my character after myself in Pokemon. Besides, names like Red, Silver, and Hilbert are trash, and actively ruin my immersion.

Pretty much this. The MCs are blank slates and given names out of convenience for conversation about the player since only calling Red, "the generation 1 male protagonist" is a mouthful. Inserting into a character would be more like actors in a stage play who adopt the character's mannerisms, lifestyle, and presence. The versions of the MCs in the Adventures manga are characters, but game protags will always be blank slates to allow for immersion.

Pokemon games are not RPGs with complicated dialogue system allowing you to basically roleplay what you want in a fantastic world. They are simplistic because they are supposed to be played by everyone, including children.
Giving yourself some tryhard fantasy name would be weirder than using your RL name/online nickname.

This. There was a brief period where I would put my name in stuff like Zelda or Pokemon, but now it just feels wrong unless if the protagonist is completely customizable. Even with the customization it feels wrong when you have stuff like Corrin or Robin in Fire Emblem, but if there's no canon way for them to look I just give the character some design I like and base the character's name off of one of my screen names since any name I try to come up with never feels right.
