they decided to go for "third version", where the climax is changed and respective parts leading up to it, rather than going for sequels, which would of course require a shitload more development since the whole adventure would basically be different,
but at the same time, they then went for adding unrelated new plot in postgame
...and IMO they don't have to choose between third version and sequels. there is an elegant middle option that was executed with mystery dungeon explorers of the sky.
In other words, that would mean keeping the main game similar, fleshing it out better and adding twists that don't change the narrative on its head (perhaps add hints to imply that this story isnt complete), and then add another completely new part of the story for the postgame.
