Instead of keeping shit people already like, Masuda cuts it for at this point no reason.

Meanwhile Sakurai is giving the players what they want AKA what already existed and adding to it on top of it.

Masuda is trying to appeal to those people who actively don't like the games and are not afraid to tell you openly while saying those who have spent thousands of hours and probably dollars aren't the one who really like them.

It's fine to have a set user base of people who play and Masuda like many higher ups in companies have failed to understand that and just keep chasing the more. They don't even need to stop adding things to try to bring in other people, they just need to stop removing shit to drive existing players away.

What Masuda is doing makes a different player base, not a larger one like a lemonade stand deciding to go with chocolate milk instead. Change for the sake of change doesn't make a company better, keeping and building off the good that exists does.

He's the complete opposite of Sakurai.

For the first time ever in both cases this holiday season I'll be skipping a Pokémon game and buying a Smash game and I don't even intend to use it for anything but the music.

It didn't have to be this way, a return to Kanto could've been fucking awesome for nostalgiafags, the people who never stopped playing at all like myself, and new players but thanks to Masuda this is how it's going down.

The problem is most likely management, I’d say. They’re rushing to shit out games every year or two and there was allegedly conflict over some of the decisions in LGPE so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a number of staff at GF that want to make the games better than they are now but they’re being held back by time constraints and just generally shitty management

You got the wrong impression from that image. I posted that because the smash team has no issues going the extra mile to give almost all the stages a visual upgrade. They could have easily just ported the wii u versions to the ultimate without any touchups.

on melee's development:

its an all too common thing because of japans fucked up work ethic for people to work themselves to death, literally, which is probably why so many people defend masudas comments on "lol making a game is hard" but lets be real, if smash ultimate can happen with the creator in good health, the biggest media franchise in the world can do it too.

Sakurai's similar to Masuda in some regard, the main one being that their issues are resolved by hiring more staff.

Smash is a system seller, and Nintendo most likely has a floor in an office building full of analysts telling them how many Switches it will sell, how many game copies will sell, and so on. i.e. they can predict the gross profit margin, and so are able to budget according to expected ROI.

Sakurai's putting out wildly better games than Masuda is, but there's a lack of professionalism there where millenials that normally can't stop whining about how bad capitalism is are falling for the sob story of someone literally refusing to share the wealth.

It's possible as some folks have said ITT that it's actually Nintendo that's restricting the hirings, but GF, and certainly Sora Ltd., should be autonomous in this regard. Otherwise I imagine in 5-10 years there will be a lot of interviews from industry vets saying that Nintendo was an atrocious company to work for from around the Wii's launch to the present day.

Yes, Sakurai does anything he can in making a game great even when he has a disease affecting both of his hands while Masuda is half assing stuff more and more as time goes on with cheap excuses. Sakurai also listens to fans by making a literal Smash Ballot and adding in the most requested characters, while Masuda can't even had a difficulty mode or post game content because he's too focused on the kids and won't let the series evolve with the broad appeal that Pokemon has.

He could've easily just ported the stages from Wii U to Switch with no touch ups, but the fact he didn't do that makes it clear to me that this isn't an issue of laziness. They are complete opposites anon. Sakurai programmed Kirby's Dreamland with a fucking trackball, nearly died during Melee's development, and often stays overnight to develop games. Sakurai tells his team that each Smash needs to have beyond the effort needed to make the games good.
Musada on the other hand takes vacations often and has literally said that they cut the Battle Frontier from ORAS because little kids would rather play phone games. I'm pretty sure no one in the game industry has admitted to being that lazy. Being that lazy? Sure. Admitting to it? Probably not.

They actually are touched up a little. Not as much as the other stages, but a bit of work has gone into the bricks and such.

project m proves this as that would essentially be what a new smash game with melee mechanics would be but since the meta would change drastically melee fans dont want that so theyve all generally stuck with melee instead.

literally all theyd be happy with is like an HD port of melee but that would disappoint everyone else who wants more characters and a new game so instead sakurai attempts to make a new game that COULD be competitive with new mechanics to appease "competitive" fans, but there is NO pleasing melee fans accept to let them play melee so...they can do that theres nothing new to give them when what they enjoy is literally what they already have.
