That's literally in a book Disney released in the 80s. Over-the-top expressions are one of the key principles of animation.

If you can't even get something that basic right, you've failed as an animator.

Having characters show emotion through more expression on their face in an animated movie is different than having a couple cardboard cutout characters stare blankly at the screen with no background with retarded lolsorandom faces that look completely different than their normal faces just so children watching it get a few chuckles in. That's the point. It doesn't matter what the anime does. It can do whatever it wants because it always have an audience, no matter what.

One audience leaves, an entirely new one comes in to replace them.

And no, Yo-Kai Watch was a serious threat to Pokemon during Gen 6, because it actually brought something new and unique to the table, while Gen 6 stuck strictly to formula. The reason YKW is dying now is because Gen 7 revitalized the Pokemon franchise by shaking things up.

People don't like to admit it, but SM Ash is probably the most successful Ash so far. People actually thank him for the stuff he has done for Alola, his strength has been acknowledged, he's part of a special task force that has saved countless lives in Alola, he debuted as a masked wrestler with his Idol and won, he's got three girls lusting after him, he's now has two mommies and a dad that cares for him, he met up with his old friends at Kanto and showed off how strong he is to everyone watching, and now he's going to save Alola from Necromza but this time, not as a glorified radar. SM Ash had probably accomplished the most and probably is having the most fun he ever will among all of the regions.

If there's one design they really shouldn't have deviated from for Ash's regional look, it's Hilbert's. The yellow zipper and mostly white bottom half (instead of it being the detailing) just tanks the simplicity of it and makes it look overly childish (ironic given Iris' common analysis of ash acting like a kid.) I somewhat get the red, white, and blue for the hat given the region's basis, but again, Hilbert's overall look carried those colors without it standing out as much.
