I like to imagine that starter pokemon are bred on a farm.
Large metal barns full of small cages with venasaurs nursing their diseased bulbasaurs while laying in their own waste. Bred in large quantities for all the kids going on their own.

It's a tradition to take my Starter to the Elite 4 in every main series game. I think I've played through Unova about ten times in total, and as shit as the Snivy line is in-game with Overgrow, I've never boxed it.
