Team Preview has been a thing ever since Gen 1. It's not new. Stadium, Stadium 2, Colosseum, XD, and Pokemon Battle Revolution all had it.

Gen 8 is not aimed at the same audience as LGPE. Ishihara said himself that Gen 8 is not an entry game and will be for long-time fans. Masuda said it will be similar to the previous handheld games.
