HG/SS was pretty low-level generally. I breezed through the Kanto gyms with zero difficulty. Hoenn and Alola were actually harder than this.

Long story short, the entire line of main-series games is very easy unless you go out of your way to make it challenging for yourself. This is why pokemon is one of very few games with standard, well-known self-imposed difficulty enhancements with dozens of variations all sorted and named and rated. At its core, pokemon is easy. you're given enough items (and money for items) along with enough experience that any of the games can be completed simply by throwing yourself at them hard enough. Unless you're willing to hold yourself back or find a romhack, don't expect difficulty from these games. They're like kirby games. They're made to be charming, not hard.

Not really an excuse, but that was because the regional dex was so limited. They really didn't have many better options. Though that just raises the question of why they made the regional dex so shit. They fixed it in Platinum.

Why should the levels matter? Your Pokémon will be about equally leveled as Clair’s by the time you get there. Clair’s team actually has some type coverage and more then three Pokémon unlike any Unova or Kalos gym.

Falkner's Pidgeotto (in HGSS) is probably the most difficult Pokemon belonging to a first gym leader in any Pokemon game. You don't have access to any Electric-types at this point, and Pidgeotto has Roost. Enjoy.

Yeah, I think if you bother to train anything but the starter before Bugsy (he also has damn Scyther) you're creating hours of work grinding. You really need one strong tank or hitter that's not Chikorita. Everything else in HGSS just collapses so you can sweep almost everything after that. I only had a little trouble with Claire.

Well, if you're putting all of your EXP into a single Pokemon, of course the game gets easier. But for a trainer that is actively collecting Pokemon as the game goes along, and distributing EXP gradually among their Pokemon, some battles can be difficult. Even if you raised your Totodile or Cyndaquil all the way to Level 11-13, you'd probably still struggle a bit with Pidgeotto. It's not unmanageable but it won't be a cakewalk either.

Johtofag here, I never got that. Specially when you get Geodude on the first cave before the Falkner. Or since you could easily get a hypnosis/curse Ghastly suicide lead against her Miltank.

Like just lead Curse Ghastly then swap to Mudslap Geodude (or Onix and have a huge base 160 defense double resist wall).

The real challenge is Clair since there is no real good spot to grind around. The only way to get a stab against her Kingdra is to get a Dratini from the game corner and raise it. Thankfully they give you Wobbufett near there and you can wreck through her team.

Unova's gym leaders blow Johto's gym leaders out of the water. Clay's Onix with Explosion, Elesa's Joltik with Energy Ball and X-Scissor,
and Drayden's Altaria. They put more of a fight than any of Johto's gym leaders.

The reason is that they made it absolutely awful to get it you inbred imbecil, also BW1 doesn't have one and the gyms aside from a couple ones are about as bad as what we got in XY without it

yeah no just rasing a couple levels and adding one shitmon to their team really didn't made that much of a difference, it just made the battle last one or two more turns max. USUM is still highest difficulty

I specifically mentioned the Pokemon that were added and the moves that brought into the gym leader's teams. Adding Joltik to Elesa's team to counter Sandile was good game design.

Problem is that he has whirlwind and sets up ON YOU with a sand attack Pidgey. Gust will usually 2HKO anything at that point and it's faster so you get one status move. Not as easy (every time doesn't work) to set up on as rockgroid gyms. The guy who said Onix; Onix will not obey, Onix is rude.

It has Thunder Wave and it's good, Dragon Pulse hits the rock and ground type behemoths from early game unless you manage to train Swinub, Fire Blast covers the rest if you end using a Steel.

Original Clair's Dragonair's were decent too with the elemental coverage. Slam is a scam, should have used something better and Gyarados also needs Thunder Wave for Bite flinching.

Easiest is gen 6 with exp share turned on but gen 2 is almost as easy as that without it being because they accidentally broke it by implementing a system too late without having time to tune it.

Bad news, OP: You won't get a good challenge until you reach the E4. And this is only because you'll go from facing extremely underleveled trainers to fighting the overleveled E4 so quickly. Even HGSS Victory Road is too easy.

This aggravated me, especially with pokemon that got evolutions in Gen 4. For instance, why did Gamefreak decide to remove Sneasel from the Ice Cave? Did they think Weavile was too overpowered? Such a decision doesn't make sense due to the fact that players can't even get a Razor Claw until they go to the Battle Frontier.
