Megas don't really count, as alternate forms aren't the same as a new species.
On the other hand, alola variants are basically a different subspecies, and some of them were legitimately good.

The game isn't nearly as interesting if there isn't enough new pokemon to discover.
The story isn't nearly good enough to make up for it.
I'm not saying it has to be like gen 5 or 1 btw
