I've always thought it's just a case of mimicry, that's assuming that Venonath is a predator of Butterfree, or on the contrary that it acquired this appearance since predators do not attack butterfree because of its horrible taste (similar to the case of the false monarch )

I'll explain, their Japanese names are:

Trapinch - Nakkurā
Vibrava - Biburāba
Flygon - Furaigon

Bagon - Tatsubei
Shelgon - Komorū
Salamence - Bōmanda

Flygon already had the "-gon" part in Japanese name which happened to go through localization, even the whole name is the literal translation. Salamence's family hadn't.

This means, that Flygon couldn't get the name from Salamence because it was already its.

Also calling antlion a "salamander" is just stupid.
