They stuck strictly to formula and didn't dare to do anything new; that's why Yo-Kai Watch was kicking Gen 6's ass, because it actually brought something new to the genre.

And then Yo-Kai Watch died because Gen 7 revitalized the Pokemon franchise by actually shaking things up.

The series is about as dead as it's ever been due to Gen 7 though ironically. And did people seriously expect Yokai Watch to surpass Pokemon when it's essentially the king of the monster catching genre?

Wrong, the Pokemon series has raked in more cash in the past two years than it ever has before.

The numbers don't lie, Gen 7 really did revitalize the franchise.

Having their thunder stolen by Yo-Kai Watch is what led to Gen 7 being what it is, and if they don't want yet another franchise to steal their thunder, they'll continue shaking things up in Gen 8

Basically, for the first time in forever, the Pokemon franchise has an actual competitor.

I wouldn't necessarily say the Gen 7 games were the main factor in the series getting a boost in cash, but more so Pokemon GO being accessible to everyone and their brother since everyone has a smart phone now.

Anon, that's more money than any franchise in the world makes. The only franchises that come close to making as much as Pokemon are Hello Kitty and Star Wars.

Pokemon is a 59 billion dollar franchise and is on course to become the first trillion dollar franchise in history.

For comparison, Team Fortress 2's microtransactions in 2013 alone made 139 million dollars. League made 624 million. There's something fucky going on here.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that chart is bullshit. This is a chart from the vgsales wikia, which uses https://www.pokemon.co.jp/corporate/en/services/ as a source. Notice how there's an 11 billion dollar difference between May 2016 and March 2017.

The sm hype season was so damn comfy. I remember seeing this for the first time. Waking up in the morning cooking my toaster waffles before heading out to work and seeing Extreme evoboost for the first time. Seeing the Alolan Forms. Seeing that leak in mid June 2016 with Tapu Koko, Charjabug, Vikavolt, Togedamaru and a few others. Good fucking times.
