I used to think it was kind of dumb looking, but it really grew on me. I think he's one of the visually better starter evos now. He has a theme without it completely overshadowing the fact that he's meant to be a monster, which later gens seem to forget more and more frequently.

Also, he looks cool on a team with Chesnaught. We have a water samurai and a grass knight, now we just need a fire viking or something to complete the warrior starter trio.

The design is good, but it's wasted on an otherwise shit mon.
SFMA with some interesting moves that don't work on such a mon (like Taunt). Mono water isn't good enough as a defensive type anymore even with insane bulk, due to the power creep (looking at you Pyukumuku).
IDK what GF was thinking, since they basically tweaked Feraligatr's stats slightly to make what was a physical tank into a SFMA.

Samurott is one of those starters that would have a cult following if it was a normal Pokemon instead of a starter (like Luxray, Lucario, etc.).
Several starters fall under this category of being really cool, but people can't see how cool it is because they expect starters to be PERFECT

Samurott just has this issue that wasn't fixed until gen 6where starters HAD to have mixed attacking stats because god forbid kids give Slash to Charizard if 'Zardo has under 80 attack.
Or Blaziken's fire moves doing little to no damage in gen 3 (Better give it like 105 Sp. attack lmao)

In my opinion he is one of the best started designs, the only problem is that he is not Water/Fighting.

He looks like a Legendary, I think he was supposed to be the leader of the mosqueteers, but then they mixed him with the water starter and replaced him with Keldeo.

I actually like Samurott as seen in its Sugimori design.
It's when I realized that it didn't use its shell horn for fighting but instead awkwardly holds swords in its hands that I started thinking less of it.

People will argue that the anatomy is still perfectly functional and looks good but it's just bad. There's literally no arguing it. There's a reason why all the "Mega Samurott" ideas you see on Google Images are bipedal. Because they fix what was broken. Those concepts are what Samurott SHOULD have been. The only people that say otherwise, people who like Samurott, don't have any actual argument against bipedal concepts other than "Looks like shit".

The same generation introduced 4 quadrupedal, fully HOOVED swordsmen who, while questionable in design, at least were much easier to understand in concept, not needing cringy excuses or awkwardly shaped unnatural items. Samurott is a tired concept with the worst possible execution, once again, simply because buying its land mobility requires a massive suspension of disbelief. I can actually hear its back cracking everytime someone draws it official design standing on its hind flippers.

In my perfect world, the BW trio would have been water/fighter, fire/dark, and grass/psychic (the reasoning for the last one being why wouldn't a snake thing that loses limbs learn to control stuff with its mind. Imagine the craziness of a contrary leaf storm psyshock combo). Anyways, some tweaks to their designs would obviously have to made, but it could have worked. Oh, and swap Samurott's Speed and special attack. Its signature move is physically anyway. and either make razor shell always drop defense, or raise the BP to 90. BAM. Insta-cool mon and usable.

I like it a lot and have the same question. I do wish Dewott would’ve evolved into something more colorful but I also don’t like evolving my Pokémon. I see why Ash doesn’t evolve his much, it’s an aesthetic. I never win Pokémon battles tho so I gave up.
