The English dub changed some
story details, and it damaged the coherency of the plot. Can't remember exactly what happened in the japanese version, though. I think the "evil trainer" wasn't even a thing.

Yeah, didn't they also add in some line that made it seem like Latios didn't die at the end when you see the three latis flying at the end? In the Japanese version those are just others of the same species

Again, I'm no expert on the Japanese version, but I found a review of the Japanese sub that mentions some of the differences that the English Dub had, and boy did the dub fuck up everything.
