People excused this limitation in Gen I since it was the first generation in the series, but every other generation has since added larger Pokedexes. And to have one of the smallest at 156 was unacceptable in their eyes.
Many of the designs were also "rip-offs" of Gen I Pokemon designs, which was conroversial to designfags. Even though many of these "rip-offs" had significant differences to the "originals," people still couldn't get away from the design similarities.
People also hated the linearity of these games, insisting to have free roam rather than the massive circular-shaped region that is Unova. Having a heavily integrated story also forced the linearity along, which made some people pissed. Forcing character dialogue boxes across the screen throughout the game every time you enter a new location is a turn-off to some players.
But personally, I like Gen 5 for at least trying to go back to basics. I hated how most of the new Pokemon were overshadowed by the existing roster in past regions. I like how we have to learn all of the new Pokemon all over again and aren't pressured into using established favorites. Learning the type matchups with these Pokemon was also very refreshing.
Yes, I don't like some of the designs of these Pokemon, but I can at least appreciate that they put some thought elsewhere into the Pokemon. Klink and its family members are just gears, ugly as they are, but each evolution adds something new to the existing design. It's like having a basic gear and it "evolves" as it receives new gears. Furthermore, pure Steel-type Pokemon are very rare in these games, so it is nice that Game Freak created at least 3 of them here. Vanillite and its evolutions were among the first ever Pokemon designed by a Westerner, and I do like the ice cream motif a lot. I also like how they are actually icicles with snow on them.
