I've never played Gen 1, should I give it a shot? I love FRLG to death but I never felt like I had to play the originals.

Also, I plan to go through the entire series at some point, should I also play the spin-offs? I'm assuming I'll get my hands full with games I havent played yet like gen 1 and other games I've only played once before (gen 5), but there are a lot of spinoffs I haven't touched yet.

Sure, go for it. Also, unless you wanna box that Pikachu, play Red or Blue. Yellow is playable with Pikachu, but if you want it to be able to keep up with the rest of your fully evolved team, spoil it with the vitamins you find and maybe even the rare candies. That is, if you don't use the candies on someone else.

Pokemon Colosseum and Gale of Darkness are double battles only after the beginning, but I recommend them.

If you have the time and the interest then why not? Visually I love the GBC style moreso than the GBA style so if minimalist stuff appeals to you there's that.

Definitely play Yellow out of the three of them, the Pikachu gimmick is really cute and some of the bugs have been squashed. (Note that Pikachu doesn't have buffed stats so cute is about the most you can hope from him.)

There is no point in ever playing gen1 if you have already played FRLG.

Its the same game with less content, tedious quality of life downgrades and uglier graphic.

The only reasons I'd play Gen1 over FLRG is because of the broken Razor Leaf and specials stats being 1 bar instead of two.
but yeah, Gen1 games are broken mess with shitty interface and horrible sprites.

If you're a big enough fan to want to play the whole series, sure. Play Gen 1 and spinoffs. This is the only reason for a "new fan" of pokemon to play Gen 1. >>36349669 and >>36349910 are correct.

I started with gen 1 and put hundreds of hours into it. Don't go back unless you already enjoy it.

They're honestly bad games, but you should definetly get an Alakazam, hell even just a Kadabra and just spam psychic type moves, also get a Dragonite for Wrap spam + agility

That's not how it works. The crit rates are based on the Pokémon specie's base speed. Level ups and stat boosts don't affect it. Every Pikachu will have the same crit rate, regardless of stats and Agility.

If you already played FRLG, then you can play gen 1 through the first gym. At that point you will have seen everything the game has to offer. You could keep playing (it's still a fun game), but you wouldn't really be missing much.

This game has a very shitty, the AI will often try to use a move with a that's super effective to your pokemon, even if it's not an attacking move (such as Lorelei's Dewgong spamming rest against a fighting type). On a side note, Lance's Dragonite can only use Hyper Beam to deal damage therefore rendering it useless against a Gastly, which you should teach Toxic to. Also do NOT use Rage ever.

pretty much 99% of nidoking's moves that are good are learned from TMs*
most of its levelup moveset is shit, by either being plain bad or not working correctly or if you're playing Red and Blue, learned way too late (>double kick in 40s)
