Do you ever feel like your team is always too similar? I usually have the generic bird and other common mons. I'm trying to play with some lesser known mons.

I'm starting USUM for the first time and want to choose some pokemon that I would have never thought to put on my team and am trying to decide. I feel like my teams are always the same.

You don't need a flying pokemon so you really don't have to catch the regional bird, or any bird for that matter.

During my blind UM playthrough I quite enjoyed Magmar with an Eviolithe and a +Spe nature because it literally outspeeds everything except Electrode, Lunala and possibly Ultra Necrozma and it learns Clear Smog as Magby at lv19 which is incredibly useful for the boss mons. it also was the only move on my team that could hit fairies effectively

Crabominable is ok too. I had a quiet one.

In general, try some mons you're indifferent/negative towards, they might become a good team member.

i've actually been replaying through the games to use different teams and use pokemon i've never used before. it's actually funny how SM/USUM got me used to not needing HMs, but using a party that isn't completely based on using Fly or Surf is actually fun.
I never got to see what most back sprites were back in the day due to lack of friends or funds for second games/consoles, so it's nice to go back and play the games with a little less pattern. It's also nice because i'm decorating them in the ribbons i ignored and moving them up to my current game in a box made for the story teams.
i also added two new random shines to my collection thanks to it (both in Y version) a queen green Beedrill and purple pick up Pumpkaboo

I almost always have a water type, a fire type, a grass type, a normal type, and then the last two pokemon are either ground/flying/electric, or an HM slave. This set up gives me decent coverage, but it also means I miss out on using other types. When I don't do that setup, it's neat, but it feels strange to not have a Pokemon that can take out, say, flying types. The kinds of Pokemon I use become even more limited by the fact that I'm picky about their appearance.
