Turn off EXP share and make sure battle mode is on set. Pick the Seal if you want the best in-game starter. Make sure it's female too

Ultra does have mostly the same story, but is a better game IMO. If you can only have one gen 7 game, I'd go with Ultra over base.

Nope. Played all 4 gen 7 games, and although it's not my favorite gen, they're pretty decent.

USUM is trash and doesn't add anything of value, and it even makes some things worse for no reason, like the entire story, a big deal considering this game is a long fucking cutscene, and the Rotom-dex, all while not fixing any of SM flaws.
You're fine with just Moon for this gen, you're not missing out on anything of value except better Pokemon variety.

I seriously recommend you get Ultra. More wild battles, better postgame, more minigames/extra activities, some new trials, Lillie and other characters get a bit less annoying, and overall you don't lose important content.

In the original, some of the trials were really, really noticeably have-finished. For example, one of them involves a Pokemon whose only attacking move is Water Gun, yet it will almost always use Soak on you first. Ultra cleaned most of them up.
