>>36364827I used him in my first BW playthrough and he was just fine. Unfortunately as I recall your first opportunity to catch Deerling comes mid-late game when you've passed the gyms he would be effective against, and the only E4 member he is usable against is the ghost girl. Still worth it though because I love his look and the Sap Sipper ability. He was on the weaker side of my party but still reliable, and he ate lots of ghost and grass type moves for us.
I loved that team, by the way. The lineup aesthetics were on point.
