Bonsly was confirmed Gen 4 very soon after the cameos. If they don't say it's Gen 8 and it's not #816 or something it will be Gen 7 no matter what game it's revealed in. They will say it don't worry.

LGPE has no compatibility with anything other than GO. It is it's own entity and isn't counted in the generations. GO also cannot send data to the main series, so it can't add to the current count. Either way, it has to be a new pokemon from a new generation.

They're a separate class of "legendaries" just like mythicals.
We used to have legendaries and mythicals, now we have legendaries, mythicals and UBs, all of which are treated as some sort of "special" pokemon in the game's code.
It's not that hard.

Game code isn't everything, the way they're referred to in other official means also counts.
The game's code is the only one that makes a distinction between the likes of Moltres (sublegend) and Ho-Oh (legend), but everywhere else they're still just called "legendary pokemon".

We have adopted the word legendary to encompass all 3 categories because it once was the only category. Our word for legendary is like the word dog it includes the species, and is sufficient to get the point across without getting specific. A pug is a dog, a cat isn't a dog.
