Aesthetically it was probably the best area in Sinnoh but I wish there would have been more to do.
You basically just go through the three main areas without any hassle until you get to Stark mountain for a five to ten minute quest and after that you're done.

I recently learnt that this is actually the first non-japanese place in the main serie. It's based on an eastern part of Russia.

According to Bulbapedo, Sakhalin is a Russian territory that was previously controlled by Japan. Maybe Game Freak felt nostalgia for the imperial Japanese era when they decided to include it.

It's actually not the first.
Faraway Island is canonically outside of Japan and, if we're going by FRLG lore, is most likely supposed to be somewhere in South America.

Mr. Fuji's diary of Mew's discovery mention that they found it in New Guinea I think.
Faraway Island is very likely supposed to be that.

Good in that it emphasized Sinnoh's exploration aspect and provided relief from Sinnoh's terrible type spread, but I much prefer the Battle Frontier as a whole.

Yes. I liked having a few more areas to explores, trainers to battle and pokémon to catch. We even get an house of our own in Platinum. Much better than XY or SM's postgame.

I used to think this way, but it doesn't make sense.

1. The Guyanese islands are pretty obscure. It would be odd to reference Guyana just for that.

2. Fuji's Faraway Island note makes it clear that he didn't want Mew to be found by anyone that could hurt it. Why bring it back to the place where he found it? Especially when there's still proof of that (the Pokemon Mansion journal).

Southern Island, Birth Island and the Navel Rock are all islands. Maybe Game Freak just wanted to continue that theme with Faraway Island either for consistency or because of technical limitations.
