>>36399735All the starters have a unifying theme; Gen 1's are common reptiles/amphibians you could easily catch as pets and share a lot of design elements; Gen 2's are all simple/pure in design and potentially based on folklore (herbal medicines, volcanic traditions and most likely the tall tale of Ramree Island's Massacre); Gen 4's are based on mythology (World Turtle, Wu Kong and Poseidon). Admittedly I don't really know what Gen 3's connection is but it'd be weird for just one of the groups not to share something while the rest do.
