Can we just talk about how perfect the first 2 season are? They're so dark and weird compared to the pokémon anime we have today. I really love how many of the episodes are so weird. I'm sure we'd never get cool ass episodes like the one with brocks dad being a faggot dead beat or the one with the giant dragonite at the lighthouse. RIP my nigga Takeshi Shudo, he really made it something special. Before it found it what it wanted to be, it was truly at it's best. There's no better shonen anime than the first 2 seasons of pokémon, YOU CAN'T PROVE ME WRONG.

The only downside is that the League losses were even worse than what we had now. Harrison will survive, but against Ritchie it was just bad.

The first 2 seasons are actually pretty bad, having rewatched them recently. About half the episodes don't really involve Pokemon battling at all, Team Rocket is actually consistently annoying (and I fucking love me some Team Rocket, but there's just nothing to them at this point, even their Pokes have no personality), and some of the animation is just bad and noticeably cheap.
On the good side you have Ash, Misty and Brock feeling like actual people even if Misty's and Brock's voice actors don't really know what their doing yet. Ash's VA fucking kills it, and after the initial juggle of James' VA he and Jessie come into their own later.
Overall the series suffered from some dubious budgeting and pacing. The show picks up heavily in the Orange Islands and Johto since the series was allowed to breathe instead of just being a quick promo for the games, and I'm of the maybe minority opinion that the show continues to climb until the tail end of Advanced, took a hit early in Sinnoh but climbs back up and then completely stalls out around the time of Best Wishes.

lmao the whole series is filler my guy it's been like that since literally day 1. Johto is at least more interesting filler, Ash's team isn't stacked with garbage that either never evolves or Exits Stage Left the second it evolves for retarded reasons and he actually gets some use out of the back catalog of Pokes of the Week in some of the first serious fights of the entire series.

More interesting? Johto has more cut and paste episodes than anything I've ever seen. While Johto is the first stable team, yes, they are literally remembered for absolutely zero beyond maybe Totodile's antics and maybe the shiny Noctowl. (and that's only because it's shiny)

Charmander exits stage left after being OG as fuck for like, 2 episodes as Charmeleon
Pidgeotto does nothing
Butterfree exits stage left as soon as its introduced in a bout of incredibly weird pacing. Bye Bye Butterfree is only emotionally effective to children because they watched the anime out of order and probably saw Butterfree used several times thanks to reruns of the same episodes, it literally leaves almost instantly after evolving (the Metapod episode was actually high tier in all fairness)
Pikachu is all well and good but knowing what it would turn into as both a character and the figurehead of the franchise, I just wanted it to stop existing for the entirety of the rewatch.
And again, in maybe half the episodes Ash doesn't even fucking use his Pokemon or only uses them as stock footage. For every good episode or two like the SS Anne wreck and Pokemon island, there's shit like the Snorlax episode where nobody does anything the entire episode, or the episode where Brock gets Vulpix where again nothing fucking happens.

I do think in fairness on Misty, at least Rachael Lillis did do better than her current dub VA (listen to the Sun and Moon dub Misty, it's just terrible), but I see what you mean.

In terms of battling the first two seasons suck. But they are more enjoyable for me since characters feel like they have proper motivation and progress, episodes try crazier things, and in general the world of Pokemon was more mysterious. The biggest issue with modern Pokemon is that it follows a safe formula rather than exploring new characters and ideas. I think Pokemon Special has its own issues but it's biggest strength is having more characters and a more interesting story.

Charizard is Mega'd, using a 225 base damage Blast Burn off a Base SpAtk of 130
Greninja, meanwhile, is not Mega'd, has a base Special Defense of only 71, isn't Rain Dance'd and was already significantly weakened by terrible fucking plays like using Cut, the most garbage possible move for it to be using.

For comparisons sake, running that through a damage calculator with both mons at level 100 and assuming EV investment properly, Mega Charizard X would fucking destroy that Greninja with a guaranteed 2hko on Blast Burn. Greninja has at best a POSSIBLE 6HKO with Water Shuriken. Ash-Greninja literally didn't stand a chance.

The only people that have any motivation for anything are Brock and Misty. Brock's character only gets built on by caring for Vulpix, and it's never addressed in any episodes beyond where he gets it and returns it. Misty may get a lot of Water pokemon, but she does next to nothing with them. She only gets tested once or twice, both in Johto, and later on in it at that. I could barely call either of them character development at all.

We also get Team Rocket's motivations and while Ash's is not given background, him aiming to be a champion isn't unusual for a kid in his world. I should clarify that what I really enjoy is characters still feel like they're growing during the start of the show. Around Johto most of the cast becomes stagnant or shift a little only to regress (Ash at the start and end of a season).

I can hardly call what Ash does motivation. More like recklessness and vanity. Having a character flaw is not enough for me. The flaw has to be addressed and corrected. For Ash, it never is. I don't know if Brock changes at all, and the same for Misty. As far as I can remember, TR doesn't get redeemed until Hoenn. I can't count that here.

Chikorita is the only Pokémon in Ash's team that evolves in Johto (Cyndaquil doesn't evolve until the Sinnoh league and Noctowl was caught as a Noctowl).

Ash's entire team in Kanto is NFEs and everything he has that does reach max evolution just fucking disappears an episode later. In Johto he at least uses a mix of NFEs, basics and mid-evolutions and his Pokemon don't get sent to the shadow realm every few episodes.

Charizard sticks around for the rest of Kanto, all of Orange Islands and the first few episodes of Johto.
Muk and Kingler are still at Oak's lab along with Charizard who came back.
There are 16 episodes between Ash's Metapod evolving and being released Butterfree being released.

The only Pokémon that this sentence applies to are Primeape and Pidgeot, two out of 5 isn't a pattern and even if at a stretch you include Raticate that's still only half and not "everything he has that does reach max evolution".

It was weird because they didn't know what pokemon was yet so they had no formula.

They retconed it later but before it was called 'The land Gyms' pokemon had like hundreds of different gyms to get badges from with even multiple episodes dedicated to non-official gyms trying to get certified or having a turf war. Gary gets like, 10 badges or something even by the time of the league. The game only had 8 (technically 10) gyms in the same way towns had only 5 buildings, limitations. Then suddenly the anime decided easy to remember numbers and formulaic aspects of the game and show will get the most appeal and eventual nostalgia.

Most of Kanto is bad, whether in English or Japanese. One thing I give 4Kids credit though is they kept the original Japanese music. This made the I Choose You movie more moving in Japanese where it actually felt like you were watching the OS, instead of some wtf modern day shit because TPC replaced all the iconic music with shit, except the dub OP.
I agree that Pokemon got better toward Sinnoh but it also became closer with the games, and so felt more video game-like and less atmospheric than the original. Many of Shudo's weirdest episodes were what came across as very memorable from S1, like:

Pokemon I Choose You
Mystery at the Lighthouse
The Island of Giant Pokemon
The Ghost of Maiden's Peak
Dig those Diglett
Go West Young Meowth

No notable battles at all in those, but all are super memorable.

I think it's horrible they tried to establish a feeling in the play as "hey, pokemons are not violence or something, it's love and friendship" and this has nothing to do with, but it's even acceptable because the animation is an advertisement of the game. It's the same when you have retarded complaining that "why Ash always starts with Pikachu" then you have to explain that each season corresponds to the game released and Ash has to have new pokemons for the children to see how the "new pokemons are awesome ".

But something you can not accept is this "romanticizing" Pokemon not evolve and want to force the argument that "evolution matters little". That's why Charizard is Ash's favorite pokemon.
