Random encounters are an outdated shitty mechanic. Literally every other RPG series has done away with them but GF is behind the times.

I think you missed my point. Yes, you can skip them by doing the puzzle right the first time. But if you fail you have to battle at least one of them, so the game is using battles as a negative consequence for your mistake. Hence, they acknowledge themselves that it's a punishment to have to battle.
