Shit. You figured it out. Gyms have easily exploitable weaknesses in order to teach the player type match ups in preparation for the endgame. They're there to train you in how that type works with their advantages and weaknesses. That's why they're called Gyms.

Mine is weavile, gliscor, snorlax, gengar, lucario, mega gardevoir
Mega Gardevoir is a shiny and her moves are psyshock, thunderbolt, quiver dance and boomburst

This is good design but gyms can and should do more imo. Look at gen 1 for example, Onix is an easyish first boss that requires you to use your starter's STAB, then Starmie teaches you the importance of speed, Erika shows the importance of status, and so on. By the time you get to the E4 the bosses regularly have a few mons that break from their regular typing to make it a bit more difficult than

I think they could do more, and I really appreciate them trying to shake things up with Trials in Sun/Moon. But also you have to treat very game like it's the kid's first in order to be accessible. I do appreciate how some gyms have at least one monster/tm move to shake things up in terms of strategy, but most of the time it just comes down to hitting them hard and fast before they can unleash it.

Also, if your gym doesn't at least have a 'maze' aspect and you're near the end of the game, you're doing it wrong.

At this point Pokemon is just common cultural knowledge for 2 entire generations, and most kids are going to be looking shit up online with even more consistency than they were buying guidebooks in the past.
Some optional tutorial info is fine, but Pokemon games need to desperately get harder and more complex. It's really hard to say that the games NEED to be simple when the first two generations were both harder and more spottily designed than today and never had an issue holding kids' attention, and Gens 4 and 5 had marked difficulty spikes and still performed very well.

Like, sure, some kids are rooted on mobile phone games, but you're not going to pull their attention for very long anyways, that's the intrinsic nature of the mobile demographic.

Very true, one drawback of Gen 1's more traditional RPG design is that they treat certain mons as generic mooks and give them to enemies 3 at a time. Gen 1 is rather dated at this point, but it does have some examples of good boss design that newer gens can and should use + expand on.

Theme: based on western traditional RPGs, with my party resembling the kind of classes in those games

The gym will be a medieval dungeon with multiple paths and riddles. I would also make my employees larp and talk in ye olde english.

I'm not sure about an ace but I suppose I could switch out Togekiss for Mega-Salamence in certain situations.
others might've fit better, like escavalier for knight or Lucario for monk but I like these guys.
I also notice my team is vulnerable to, Ice, Dark and Ghost (3 each), so that might be an issue.
(I'm leaving my house now, so no time to rethink)

I think I had a team with a similar theme to this specifically taken from the Light Warriors in FF1, but for Gen 4. It was Machamp (Master)/Scizor (Warrior)/Weavile (Ninja)/Misdreavus (Black Mage)/Honchkrow (Red Mage)/Blissey (White Mage)

I always felt like Ice would shine more as an early-game Gym rather than late, so I'm makin' this, an Ice Gym that isn't a pushover.

This one works more as a long-ass Trial, I think, with Mega Banette being the totem. You interact with different objects trying to find your way out of this hole, and certain objects would be pokemon. You interact with a coffin to push it into a hole, it's Cofagrigus. You climb up a statue to reach an ancient castle, it's Golurk. Chandelure is swinging across the ruined dining hall, and Dhelmise is a chain to let down the drawbridge. Banette is standing in the way of the exit, and summons Sableye and Spiritomb to help it. Why can it mega without having a trainer? The castle and crater are from the original firing of Kalos' Maguffin Gun, and it irradiated the area with mega power.
