It has a shit color scheme (seriously why is the shiny 100x better), a shit in-game model, and is a rather ugly design. Put that next to Greninja and baby's first fursuit and there you have it.
It's my favorite Kalos starter but it's obvious why it's not loved much.

It was terrific last gen, considering it dealt with Lando-T (which now sports Z-Fly), Sand offense (which is now barely seen as it's susceptible to faster Hawlucha sweeps which also beat Chesnaught), and Rain (which now has Pelipper over Politoed so Hurricane is a bigger worry out the gate).

Because people knew Froakie would evolve into Greninja and Fennekin looked good. I bet if at least half of those who choose Fennekin knew how shit Delphox would look like they would have went with Chespin.

Same. He is my favourite and I am honestly amazed he appeared in Pokemon Generations. When we saw the AZ episode, I was so expecting it to be Greninja again. Even more surprising was that Charizard was only shown for about a second yet it was Chesnaught that got to defeat AZ's Golurk.

Because it is a unabashed Cutemon when people expect starters to have "BADASS" final stages, instead Chesnaught is the most adorable and huggable in its own line. My favorite of all starter final stages though.

Bowser, but with Captain Falcon's Falcon Punch (or Ganondorf's Warlock Punch) instead of Bowser's Fire Breath. All fire effects are replaced with more "grassy" (thorny?) effects.

this. its helmet doesn't look like a proper helmet and instead looks like it just has no fur on its head. the shiny color scheme mitigates this somewhat but its still pretty hard to ignore. adding some protrustions to the helmet like Chespin and Quilladin would've improved its design massively.
