It says a lot that Gary lost the Indigo league before Ash did, he only got in the top 32.

Then in the Johto league he loses in the top 16 to Ash, then quits entirely.

When you stop to think about it, Gary lost both leagues before Ash, then gives up being a trainer after only 2 league.

I assume that since the regional champion never changes in the anime that people don't challenge the league nearly as often as ash does. If Tobias did what ash does he'd be the champ of multiple regions

Yeah, in hindsight, he was mostly just a bigoted nerd that took advantage of his grandfather's name and money to make himself look cool. Wonder if him realizing that was the reason why he didn't have his car and cheerleaders in Johto.

Gary's one redeeming factor is that he goes on to study pokemon himself. His episode in D/P clearly shows he has better sense than Ash.

It depends on the league, Ash is kind of going the nuclear route running league after league, especially since he just trashes his pokes between seasons.
You've got to think, most people can only handle oh so many pokemon and once they've hit their peak, most of them aren't psychopathic enough to ditch them for potentially stronger ones just to win a tournament. Gary actually started off even more psychopathic than Ash with 200 Pokemon caught by the end of Kanto, though by the time of Diamond and Pearl he was shown to care a lot more for his Pokemon and that probably played a large role in his decision to stop training.

Ash is a Giovanni in the making
>only cares about if Pokemon are strong, ditches them whenever he loses a league (or at least puts them off on someone else unless they're useful for a certain situation)
>only genuinely attached to his first couple Pokemon, almost all of which were top percentage (Pikachu and Butterfree)
>willing to abandon Pokemon that won't listen to him or aren't strong enough instead of fucking TRAINING them (Charizard, Primeape)
>willing to augment his Pokemon in dangerous ways to get an unfair advantage (See Surge's Gym episode)
>blitzes through regional leagues at a pace most people and pokes couldn't keep up with because he's desperate to win
>people only associate with him because he has some kind of natural charisma, but like his Pokemon he just takes advantage of them and then ditches them.
