The gameplay is interesting and fun because you get to use signature moves of Nintendo characters optimized for a fighting game.
You can't argue how good smash would be if it didn't have Nintendo characters because the game is built around having Nintendo characters. That is literally what makes it Super Smash Bros. in terms of gameplay and premise.
