Pokemon went to success when Charizard and Blastoise was on the covers WORLDWIDE.
Venusaur didn't show up much neither in the anime, the sales in Japan doesn't prove much that Bulbasaur was the face of Pokemon at the time of Pokemon Boom in the 90s.
Green sold much less than Red in Japan too cuz its rival is a dragon.

Nope, Masuda himself said that they chose Blue because in the west Blue is the opposite color of Red unlike in Japan when it's Green.

this and also the reason for leafgreen being leafgreen instead of waterblue internationally was GF getting a bit autistic about it and deciding that "water and fire" makes you envision conflict, whereas "leaf and fire" is more like the peaceful world of coexistence. whether blastoise or venusaur would be the mascot didn't play into it.

I got into the pokemon games a bit late and I honestly looked up which was the most popular Kanto starter and chose Bulbasaur because it seemed the least popular. I think Bulbasaur has gotten more popular over the years but it wasn't always like that. At least I grew out of thinking Venusaur was ugly and it's now my favorite pokemon. I'm not in love with the mega though.

Apart from Blaine (aka the easiest gym leader, just capture any of the 1983 water pokemon and teach it surf) and Sabrina (which shits on everyone because psychic too OP in gen 1) Bulbasaur can pretty much solo the entirety of kanto gyms. The first two gyms are a red carpet for it to stomp through and the third and fourth gym are not effective on it either. Game is literally made to please bulbafags while charmanbros get screwed

Bulbasaur has both the smallest and worst movepool out of the three starters in Gen1.
Solar Beam was the worst of the signature moves.
Vine Whip had 10 pp
No poison moves except Poison Powder and Toxic.
no Earthquake and pretty much limited TM movepool.

It also had ugly and inaccurate sprites that turned people off.

Charizard at least gets EQ, Fly (Yellow), Dig, Flamethrower and Fire blast.

Blastoise gets Ice Beam, Blizzard, Dig and several others.

Bulbasaur wasn't really designed to be a child-friendly experience apart from being super effective on the first two gyms, hence why kids hate status moves.

No, Blastoise has been the butt of the jokes for always appearing just to lose to Charizard and he barely had any special episodes for it.

Venusaur didn't appear much either and its mega first and only appearences was to be defeated by Charizard X in 2 minutes screentime.

May had Bulbasaur for like 20 episodes and she only used her Bulbasaur for contests.

Shauna's Bulbasaur was the only one who didn't fully evovlve while Charmander and Squirtle did and participated in many battles while Shauna's Bulbasaur was just a performer for the stages with Shauna's flabebe.

A very common opinion though
Charizard got two good mega designs one with spikes and the other with Blue flames and black skin.

Blastoise got three cannons

Venusaur got two 2D small flowers on its face and butt.

While Blastoise will always be my boi, Bulbasaur's line is the only one of the first gen starters I like all the way through. Charmander/Charizard are my least favorite color, and squirtle and wartortle look really meh.

wrong
fire blast miss all the time and hydro pump is a worse surf in every aspect. it also gets spores and leech seed which are based - movesets are shit for everyone in gen 01

you cant get more child friendly than bulbasaur. easily handles the first half of the game and the only gym leader it cant be, you will need to have a water pokemon anyway to surf and progress the game so it isnt an issue

You get Vine Whip for the first half of the game with Leech Seed for grass moves and Tackle that is most of the time useless and Cut if you were one of the many dumb kids who teach starters HMs.

Grass was resisted by 6 types and Poison was a death guarantee against the broken Psychic type.

Kids don't like status moves like Leech Seed and Sleep Powder over beating everything with brute force. Bulbasaur was designed for PVP, Charmander was designed for children who like cool monsters and Squirtle was for those who want easy time beating the game.

everything was a death guarantee against the broken psychic type. when the AI wasnt retarded enough to use the broken moves, kadabra/alakazam could kill anything it wanted

young me read up on my gym leaders and chose a strategy that would easily wipe the floor with the first two, resist the third and fourth, have tankiness and neutral resistance against the fifth, only have real trouble with the sixth and seventh by the time I had other good pokemon, and utterly destroy giovanni, the leader of team rocket and the final gym leader
then the e4 comes along and based venusaur makes half of lorelei's team cry, resists a bunch of bruno's stuff and removes the onix, and then i've saved the rest of my team for agatha, lance, and the champion
reason? got introduced to pokemon by the anime and immediately learned the lesson ash never did burasuto baan doesn't count
