I come to Pokémon to see magical monsters fighting each other. The mistake this manga made was in reducing the one thing that made it unique into costumes for the human characters. At that point, what's the difference between this manga and any shounen I could be reading besides the characters cosplaying as Pokémon during battles?

Yeah, no it ain't. Putting aside how dumb it is in the first place, it can't work. Digimon is fine because they're digital, non-biological. The only thing you'd get from fusing a person and Pokemon is a furry porn.
