X and Y has some fairly challenging NPCs when you don't abuse the fuck out of Exp. All and Pokemon Amie.

These are a few of the trainers that gave me some trouble. There's probably more but I forgot about them.

The NPCs in X and Y are harder than the Gym Leaders. And it's mostly the Black Belts as well, they're harder than the Veterans.

The worst NPC I've ever faced is that asshole Veteran and his max stats Honchkrow in USUM's Route 14. Guards the extremely important Shadow Ball TM, and is level 36 right before Totem Mimikyu which is level 35.

I said this in a different thread but XY Black Belts and Battle Girls are usually a bad time. There's a few in and before the Reflection Cave that I remember very well. Even when I did a Psychic only run I still got my shit kicked in a couple of times because Psychic types are frail as hell.

Yes but they mostly lie in battle facilities. Orre Colosseum's trainers are one example and on top of that I believe every battle is a Double Battle and the trainers actually use legitimate strategies. Veterans and a few others in Gen 7 definitely do. As do all the Totem battles and every boss battle. I've seen Plumeria's Golbat outspeed a Manectric of the same level, which would never have happened in a previous game.

There's one trainer with a Sawk that knows Retaliate that can 2HKO a lot of Pokemon that don't resist it.

I'm doing my first Y run and that Combat Girl cunt gave me a hard time with her Hawlucha. Levels were 2 above mine and the only "counter" I had was Floette which had only half HP and got OHKOed by Aerial Ace. Pancham endured a hit luckily, Rock tombed the Hawlucha and finished it with don't remember who.

I remember that one team Gonzap had where he roared his own hyper beam users to that they could attack every turn. You probably can't do that nowadays due to power creep but that's still awesome.

Something like that happened this last VGC.
It wasn't Hyper Beam, but, IIRC, someone made their Incineroar Roar out their Mega Metagross to remove a bunch of Intimidate-induced Attack drops.
