I think USUM is great if you haven't played SM, although I think the SM story ends in a better way than USUM.
About the complaints of handholding, I don't remember there being a lot of handholding, just that you're healed by NPCs too many times. And the amount of cutscenes at the beginning of the game. Maybe it's because of the Pokémon I used, but there were some parts in the game I couldn't just steamroll through. Just don't forget to turn the Exp. Share off.

I think the battle facilities of gen VII are pretty decent, just don't expect Battle Frontier tier.
