What would even be the point to having a city with a bunch of meaningless buildings like that picture? We just wouldn't be able to enter them like a lot of the buildings in Gen. VII. They'd be better off putting their resources elsewhere.

Anon, if you're making a virtual world with an adventure atmosphere, creating great cities is a great form of doing it. You can simply reuse an assest, change it a bit, and you have another assest. With a few spacing, scaling, assimetry and actual effort to create the illussion of a big city

Yes, it's cheaper not to add things, we all agree on that. But in media, especially story telling media such as books, films and videogames, the setting in time and place is important and often compulsory. Otherwise, the consumer doesn't become invested in that particular world, meaning not only that your work becomes forgettable but also less entertaining, which is the opposite from its objective. Yes, nicer, bigger cities/maps would probably be not so useful in practical terms, but they do play a big role in letting the player become engaged in that particular world. If every city is the equivalent of a gas station, they are reduced to no more than a checkpoint

Yeah, when you're making an engine for new hardware, it's redundant to make a SECOND engine (not to mention wasting time, money and resources better used elsewhere, like on the engine you're currently making), especially for a game you want to launch before the engine is ready. That's when you re-use an engine you've got lying around, if possible. I also think it's laughable you lot saying this is lazy when EA ported FIFA '16, stripped of most of it's features, called it FIFA '18 and sold it for full whack. Didn't see half as much a ruckus over that one strangely.

Also Ironically, the game that went as far as possible for immersion to make the city feel bigger than it was, was Gen 1 with Saffron City, which will likely remain as such in LGPE.

The first town you visit is always pretty tiny tbqhfamalamadingdong, I see no reason why you guys should get so upset at Viridian City looking how it always has, I mean what the fuck else are they going to do with a city that you basically skip through plotwise. It basically just exists to teach you what the Mart and Center are before you go through the first forest. X/Y did the same thing actually.
