It's amazing how Ash isn't even the same character anymore. In the original series every other interaction with him and Misty is him insulting her. In the current ashnime he would never do that because of how fucking over-sanitized it is and all the characters are perpetually happy cardboard cutouts.

The descent started with Johto, half due to the GS Ball into Celebi Arc Plot getting dropped because of M04, and half because Pokemon was quickly establishing itself as a professional franchise, leading to both the Executives and TPC to have to keep a very close eye on the writers as well as set up stricter and stricter episode guidelines as time went on.

This was one of the problems with BW. They tried to bring back the Ash/Misty dynamic with Iris, but they failed miserably because Ash never fights back against her like he did with Misty, he just sits there and takes her bullshit. This had the added effect of making people dislike Iris when she could have been a decent character.
