I was a child playing with Charmander and had no idea what I was doing. I tried a few times, found out that if I ember enough I can win (Especially if I have potions) and after a couple of tries won.

It's not shitty game design. Oak literally states that Charmander will be difficult to raise. The starters are your first indication of a difficulty setting. Bulbasaur is easy mode, Squirtle is medium mode, and Charmander is hard mode.

You don't need to know what "stats" means to see that your fire monster's fire attack that has been raping everything in the game so far is doing pretty good damage to the giant rock snake as well.

Charizard gets no flying moves in gen 1, unless you play yellow and even then it's just Fly, he's only mildly useful against Lorelei. Fire spin is ok but there are better Slash users
