By necessity, I *do* usually have an HM dumpster, more so I don't angst over not having a fish or a bird on my team than much else, but I usually put my HM's right on my team.
I don't like having them, but I figure it's one of the ways you can make the game that bit harder and more immersive. Your pokemon, reasonably, would HAVE to do more than fight.
Mostly I'm just upset that we are stuck using THOSE HM moves, and can't unlock the utility with the right badge, and the HM's are failsafes that always work, but there were more moves that could be used to overcome the same challenges.
Imagine if, like, having a Bug pokemon with String Shot, or Sticky Web could be used in place of Rock Climb? You'd still need the Rock Climb badge, there would just be more ways to do it.
