It was rather recently, though I don't know if it was more gen 6 or 7. Regardless, thinking about it, the gameplay is not that engaging. I mean, you could play the game in your sleep, it's that simple. I came from a long experience of games that require timing and tactics. Pokemon and everything like it is white noise. This became especially apparent when playing Cyber Sleuth and I could practically just mindlessly grind for hours and hours. I am not one for a great amount of challenge, not even mentally, but this gameplay just isn't fun, it's just hypnotizing. If I didn't want to play with the pokemon I was using, I wouldn't play at all. It's even become so that whenever I defeat the strongest enemy in the game, I just stop. I don't even attempt to level anymore. I have come to consider that not even that may have been a good reason to play the games. Liking something purely for the aesthetic is not valid to me.
