What region has the most sense of adventure and mystery? My vote goes towards Johto with Hoenn as a close second. Pokémon is about exploring caves, seas and long routes.
Unova is by far the worst in this regard. Yes, I get it, it's themed after New York and urban areas. But that's not what Pokémon is about. Gen 5 just doesn't feel like Pokémon. It doesn't have that spirit.
Pokémon journies should have a sense of magic and melancholy, which Unova doesn't because it's plastered with big cities everywhere.
