The only generations with an obvious designated starter are I and VI.
II's is arguably Typhlosion, but there's not nearly enough media to really back this up (and the Johto starters were fucked over by Ash carrying over his Kanto team)
IV shills Piplup most, but gives almost no attention to Empoleon. Meanwhile Ash had both Infernape and Torterra, but neither really got shilled that much.
V gave equal attention to all starters, oddly.
VII anime seems to want to shill baracat, but really it depends on if Smash decides to step in and shill it.

So l never evolve my torchics and grovyles. While only evolving mudkip when it only needs 1 level of marshtomp.

To me swampert is the gen 3 starter choice.

what? infernape was like ash's best pokemon and was one of the few pokemon aside from pikachu to have an arc. aside from greninja infernape was by far and none the most shilled starter. charizard didn't appear nearly that much in the kanto anime and was a dick when he did

Is it that crazy to think that he heard Elm say which Pokemon is which? Especially when he first battles you his dialogue makes it seem like he knows his starter has the advantage over yours.
