I did play them, though. In fact, I actually completed Moon. Beat the champion, caught the Ultra Beasts. Only thing I didn't bother with was the Battle Tree.
I hated the whole experience.
I truly believe that I should give everything a chance instead of mindlessly hating things, so I can formulate my own opinion. And S&M was a total step down from even XY and ORAS(which as much as I love Hoenn, I actually dropped around Lilycove.)
I haven't even bothered with USUM from what I've seen, there isn't much to justify playing them.

My first playthrough was enjoyable up to the elite 4. I beat them then had no motivation to pick it back up, I saw the hate it got on here and agreed. Found the energy to give it another go and despite it's many flaws I enjoyed it more the second time round.
Didn't get past akala in ultra moon though. Just couldn't do it. If there was a cutscene skip option it would've been fine I suppose.

Controls, how everything comes together, and whatnot, yes, their opinions would be invalid but you can absolutely pull some truth about how the games are without playing.

In more complicated games you might need to also have played all of it, but Pokémon is not one of those so playing some of it is good enough.

In the case of S/M, once you've reached the end of the second island arc you have a decent awareness of what S/M are about.
