I have bought this game last december but still haven't played it. Is it worth a playthrough to at least get the new legendaries? Are people still playing online?

Yes

I have a more important question, because I wanna start with online. Can I inject wondercards without worrying about getting banned from PGL?

Festival Plaza is cancer, so the playerbase is much smaller than it's supposed to be since it makes doing anything extremely annoying, but yeah people still play, you can find matches on Battle Spot. Lots of Japs though.
Have you played SM before? If not, then it's worth a playthrough. If you did, maybe not.

I started it and just beat the first "gym" and I honestly really like the game.
Its just what you want from a pokemon game only there's more content added including fun extras that I won't spoil.
The quality of life improvements are great also when you are coming from just replaying Heartgold.
I recommend it. Just go in unbiased. I honestly think its great.

depends, did you think s&m was too handy holdy and story based? dont play us&um it's basically the same, it only gets really different at the end.

Go for it.
I haven't played Pokemon game since black and white 2 and had blast.
It feels different than previous games and the difficulty spikes are sometimes pretty weird but overall I had fun.
