How can someone have Gen 4 as their favorite generation? I just don't get it. Gen 4 is by no means bad but while it isn't the worst generation in any aspect it isn't the best in any either. It's safe and inoffensive, like a filler generation.

That is, in a way, pretty enjoyable. Every other Gen has its issues:
> Gen 1 is pretty archaic to replay
> Gen 2 has this horrible distribution and not built for varied & repeated playthroughs
> Gen 3 has the tedium of water based exploration, especially in the endgame
> Gen 5 tried to soft reboot the franchise, to the displeasure of some
> Gen 6 & 7 pull constant stops throughout an Adventure that hardly feels like yours
Gen 4 is kind of just slow and that's it really. I guess for someone who doesn't like big/fat designs, they may find the Gen 4 roster a bit underwhelming, because there's a lot of these. That aside, it's pretty nice.

Why do the Pokémon designs introduced in a generation factor in to your opinion of it? I don't get it. I've never thought of it like that.

Gen 1 has by far the highest number of great designs in my opinion, but they are not my favorite games at all. Likewise there aren't many Gen 5 Pokémon that I like but I still think B2W2 are the best games.

I'm gonna spend 30 hours with 6 Pokemons most likely from this Generation so they better have something to appeal to me. If they do, it makes the experience more engaging. If not and i spend another game with a Tentacool, a Geodude or a Zubat, my experience won't be as enjoyable.

Well to be honest the titular Pocket Monsters are why I play it. Without them it's just a mediocre children's JRPG series.
4's designs are among my least favorite though.

That's really just 7 - the tagalong party in 6 hardly take the limelight nor do they get much development

That is not the only issue. Heavy HM usage is also an issue with Gen. IV.

What was safe about adding 3D elements, the special/physical split, the most complex region and the most challenging campaign in the series at the time? Not to mention the designs and legendaries.

Are you shitting me? Everyone's teams were pretty much identical in DP and even in Platinum it still takes a while for there to be any significant variety.

Look at all the great route designs in Sinnoh, it really stands out for having the most complex and interesting routes in the game.

I started with 3 and I’d still say that 4 is my favorite just because I remember by blown away by all the technical advancements that came with the move to the DS.
