I'm seriously considering buying either a Game Boy Advance so I can play old Pokemon games on the go. Which is the best one, regular or SP?

I kind of like the regular one better: it looks cooler, slicker and more ergonimic, but I'll go with whichever is the best system.

Why not just get a DS, 3DS or PSP and install CFW? It's easy af and you can play more games. There's literally no reason to buy a GBA unless you just like the aesthetic. Even if you just wanna play with the cartridges, the DS lets you.

Ah, yes but I'm looking for the original experience. The GBA allows me that.

I'm doing some research and it looks like the SP is the winner, even though it looks a little awkward to hold for long periods.

Either that or the Micro but I'm not sure if that one plays GB games, I never owned one

Buy a nintendo DS lite so you can transfer pokemon from third gen into 4th gen, and so on. And yes, you can play GBA games on it, just not the GB games

Go with the SP. It had a front light which I the cheaper first model but the second more expensive model had a backlight. Both are good imo. Whatever fits you and you budget.

The SP is so many fucking lightyears better, it makes me angry that anyone would even ask.

The OG gameboy should have been recalled, what an iredeemable piece of trash. Even with a floodlight shining directly on it, it's fucking impossible to see anything.

SP has those flat/clicky buttons which are far more comfortable, doesn't hurt your thumb after extended play sessions. It's smaller, it's clam shell but with huge hinges so the hinges probably won't break like they do with the DS systems.

The SP is vastly superior. The regular Advance has a screen that you can't fucking see and the buttons have an awkward mushy feeling to them, rather than the nice solid click of the SP. On the plus side the old one does have a headphone jack.

SP has a backlight, which is a necessity imo. But if it is too small for your hands (which it will be if you are an adult) then a DSphat or DSlite is a better choice.

If your heart's set on the advance, there's no reason to go with the SP over it unless you plan to go out with it. If you're out with it, the SP's a whole lot better for that.

The other thing, a very minor point against the SP, is if you plan to play GB/GBC games then they stick out the bottom of the device and if you play at a desk or on your chest then you may often bump the catridge contacts off of the device contacts and freeze your game. I remember doing that a lot as a kid.

what did you buy your sealed SPs at? they got as low as $99 US. PS2 slims were $119 on amazon back in 2007 and I am still kicking myself. I should have bought 2 or 3 or 10 instead of 1.

SP is rechargable and has light in the screen. THe link cable also works with a GameBoy Colour, so you can link between GB games on a GBC and the SP.

You know the joke about how Nintendo consoles were made of Nintendium? Yeah, the SP was quality, high-grade Nintendium, while the DS had the crappy leftovers. All the Nintendium for those went to the Wiimotes so that they'd break the TV instead of the TV breaking the remote.
