>>36493343It's always important to have a story in a video game, no matter how minor. They're there to give context to the player and possibly give some lore to the world you are in.
However, games should always place gameplay first and story second, because do you seriously want to slave through a boring, shitty game just for a piece of text?
Even if you hate the story, Pokemon SM/USUM are still fun to play through, and even though the dialogue can get a bit unbearable at times, a big story is necessary in SM/USUM because the main games has expanded into bigger adventures since the beginning.
tl;dr at least it isn't a sony game
