Nintendo's greatest asset right now is its IP. In the hands of a company like Disney, Activision or Aniplex who would whore it out like a firstborn daughter, "Nintendo" as a brand would be the most valuable in the world. Mario has more recognition worldwide than anything Disney has right now. Nintendo plays far smaller than it actually could be, and that's why the company does a lot of stupid things.
GF is no different. It's a small club of 1980s era anime fans who are 2D artists by trade and are reporting a Gameboy game over and over to gimmicky Nintendo hardware. They can't program for shit and they're understaffed and underskilled for the kind of transformative demands of each new generation.
