that arc actually has some greatly written chapters, the only reason people hate it is because it didn't have brook, but the writers pulled some good effort into very good chapters, its a generally consistently good arc with classics like snorlax, scyter, lapras, ghost ships, crystal onixes and pink islands, the recent twitch stream reminded me its a pretty good arc (And really short, just 30 episodes!).
the icing to the cake is the last fight for the league trophy, ash uses his full team against a dragonite, considered the strongest non-legendary mon in the series, it was compensating for the wet-fart that the kanto league was (seriously the last match of ash vs ritchy is literally half the episode of team rocket just delaying ash to get to the match in forced drama, and the match itself is shitty as hell).
just pretend ash defeated a legendary dragon, got a trophy, traveled wonderful tropical islands with great plots and be done with it, seriously mid-fith season in johto is where everything goes downhill anyways.
